A recent incident involving a disruptive flyer on a United Airlines flight has made headlines. A British national, Alexander Michael Dominic MacDonald, has been ordered to pay United Airlines $20,638 after his actions led to the diversion of a flight from the U.K. to Newark.
The U.S. Department of Justice disclosed that MacDonald, aged 30, was involved in a heated argument with a companion during a flight from London to Newark Liberty International Airport. The escalating altercation prompted the flight crew to intervene, leading to a disruptive situation onboard.

Events Leading to the Disturbance
As per the Justice Department’s report, MacDonald’s argument with his companion escalated as the flight entered U.S. airspace. Despite attempts by flight attendants to defuse the situation, MacDonald’s behavior became increasingly disruptive and confrontational.
Incidents of threatening and intimidating behavior towards the crew prompted further intervention, culminating in MacDonald’s declaration that he would “mess up the plane.” Subsequently, the decision was made to divert the flight to Bangor International Airport in Maine.
Following his arrest and subsequent detention, MacDonald was sentenced on April 25, 2024. While he will not serve any additional jail time, he is required to repay United Airlines for the costs incurred due to the diversion.
The authorities involved in the case, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Customs and Border Protection, and the Bangor Police Department, worked together to address the disruptive incident and ensure the safety of all passengers and crew onboard.
